Archbishop calls for clarity over education bill

-29/1/04

The Most Reverend Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Birmingham and Chairman of the Catholic Education Service for England and Wales, has called for clarity over the funding of higher education following the five vote Government victory this week on tuition fees.

He said: "The current and proper aims of expanding access to Higher Education while maintaining and improving standards clearly need adequate funding."

"The decision taken by the House of Commons indicates a principled way forward but not without continuing lack of clarity in its detail and consequences. This decision presents Higher Education institutions with new challenges."

"This is particularly true for some of the Church colleges. Not least among these challenges is how to price particular courses without being clear of the impact of these new measures on students decisions."

"Archbishop Nichols added: The political impact and tension created by these proposals in recent weeks has distracted much attention and reflection from the issues facing Higher Education in this country. These are crucial matters."
