A d-i-y style weekend on subversion, spirituality and struggle
This is one of a series of biennial events organised by British Liberating Theologies Now for those involved in Christian social action. It is aimed at exploring a key theme through personal stories, group discussion, workshops, creative worship and common life.
Cost: (£50 for an event lasting from Friday evening to Sunday lunchtime, including accommodation and meals) is designed to make it as accessible as possible. We aim to have 15-20 people participating – so please enquire straight away.
Location: is Wistaton Hall, Crewe, a modest but comfortable Catholic retreat centre.
Theme: With liberation theology questioned by the demise of the left, the crisis of religion and all-embracing economic globalisation, what does ‘liberation’ mean any more? We will look at this question out of our practical experiences, but guided by the idea and reality of ‘post-Christendom’ – the unravelling of the close alliance of Christianity and the established order.
Jonathan Bartley's book, Faith and Politics After Christendom: The Church as a movement for Anarchy, will be one of the resources used. Jonathan hopes to join us.
Workshops: Participants are invited to suggest and lead workshops and creative events. Ideas already suggested include Israel-Palestine, peacemaking, women and liberation, liberating the Bible from Christendom, and more.
