At this time of the year, I am accustomed to being asked to contribute to a 'look back' over the year just closed. This year, I'd rather look at a jumping-off point for the year we have just entered.
“Health tourism: the TRUE cost”: “Foreigners using NHS cost Britain up to £2 BILLION a year, government reveals – 100 times more than previously claimed” declares a Daily Mail headline. Yet the reality is very different, and there is little evidence that many people visit the UK for the purpose of getting free medical treatment.
The now highly politicised immigration system in the UK and remorseless attempts by the UKBA to deny people entry or to deport them on any possible grounds produce daily injustices.
