Hours left to save Vulture Funds Bill

The Jubilee Debt Campaign (JDC) has warned that there are only hours left to save the Vulture Funds Bill, which was held up last week after an isolated Tory MP resisted the cross-party support for the measure.

The Leader of the House of Commons, Harriet Harman, needs to make a decision today (Tuesday 16 March) to reschedule the Bill for Thursday (she needs to give two days’ notice). JDC want us all to email her.

The Bill would restrict the activities of vulture funds, companies that buy up poor country’s debts and then sue for massive profits, to the detriment of millions.

The Tories have just said that they will support the Bill if it reappears.

If this does not happen, it is highly unlikely that the Bill could go through before the general election, despite having passed all its stage in the Commons with cross-party support.

Tory MP Christopher Chope undoubtedly thought that his objection on Friday would stop the Bill becoming law. Let’s prove him wrong.

It took me less than 30 seconds to send Harman an email by going to http://www.jubileedebtcampaign.org.uk/?lid=5528. JDC have even provided the wording.

JDC suggest that emails will continue to be useful up until 10.00 this evening.
