Conference aims to create movement of 'peaceful' schools

A conference taking place in London on 18 May will explore how primary schools can be transformed into peaceful communities. The one-day event, organised by Spiritual England with the support of Winchester University and Quaker Life, offers a programme of talks and workshops aimed at teachers and educators.

Pioneering Headteachers and educationalists will address topics such as creating a peaceful school where all children and staff are valued and helped to develop inner peace, designing peaceful school grounds and how to teach children skills in conflict resolution and cooperative working.

This visionary event is dedicated to the memory of Damilola Taylor the murdered London primary school pupil. His father Richard Taylor OBE will be at the conference and will take part in a dedication ceremony.

Anna Lubelska, director of Spiritual England said: "Concerns about children's safety, mental health and well-being have never been higher. We must act now to change this. At the conference teachers will find out how to make schools a place where children can experience peace and learn how to be peace ambassadors in their families and neighbourhoods. Peaceful schools aren't boring! They are safe places where children and teachers are happy and working cooperatively and dynamically with each other."

In the words of the Dalai Lama: "There is a great and growing desire for change in the world; change that ushers in a renewed commitment to ethical and spiritual values, that resolves conflicts peaceably, employing dialogue and non-violence, that upholds human rights and human dignity as well as human responsibility."

Chris Nickolay of Quaker Life said: "Schools are one of the main sources of the values that shape our society so they have a vital role to play in transforming our world."

Following the conference it is hoped that similar regional gatherings will be arranged and there are plans to send out information packs to schools with further ideas and advice.
