Ditch Trident, say Labour Party members in new poll

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmement (CND) has responded to a Yougov survey which shows that 70 per cent of Labour Party members support getting rid of Britain’s nuclear weapons system.

Kate Hudson, CND General Secretary, said: “The overwhelming majority of Labour Party members must be listened to. They rightly recognise that Britain’s nuclear weapons are an enormously expensive and dangerous white elephant. Trident addresses a phantom security threat rather than the real threats like the unfolding climate crisis, which must be at the top of the agenda.

“Cancelling the replacement of Trident would not only free up billions of pounds that could be spent on building a carbon-free economy, but it would also be an important step towards realising the long-held ambition of every UK government – Labour or Conservative – since our country ratified the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty almost 50 years ago: building a nuclear weapons-free world.”
