Combining DVD clips, biblical teaching, discussion and practical actions, it is designed to help your church put its faith into action. Livability and Tearfund recently developed Just People, a course for churches to help them discover how tackling poverty and pursuing justice, both locally and globally, are at the heart of Christian mission. Just People brings together down-to-earth theology, reflection, inspiration and experience with practical exercises. It will help your church grapple with issues of justice and poverty and think practically about how you can respond effectively. It has been developed as part of the Micah Challenge UK, a coalition of Christian organisations and churches in Britain united in their concern to fight poverty.
Just People is available for purchase from our website and comes with a DVD of the talks and a handbook with all the activities and worksheets you’ll need for the course. We have been asked by several churches to help them prepare for the course and learn from what other churches have done. This day will be fun and interactive and will take you through the material, how it works and answer any questions you have. For more information about the course please visit the Just People pages from our website.
“Just People helped me and a small group of people look at our local community and ask the question "does God care?" The answer to this question provoked us to get involved and see the relevance of Jesus and His perspective in our local community.” -Adam Clark, Sunbridge Rd Mission, Bradford
What is Just People like?
There are six sessions and we’ve used a well-tried and tested model of teaching (the talks are on the DVD but also written out in the handbook and we encourage you to give the talks yourself in order to tailor them to your setting) and small-group discussion. We added a crucial element of practical action by asking each person to do something each week and report back on how it went. We also ask you to undertake a practical 'day of action' as an integral part of the course.
Do I need to attend this event in order to run Just People?
No, lots of churches have run Just People without attending a training event but attending the event will give you tips for making the course run smoothly and also the confidence to tailor the course for your church so that it has lasting impact.
Has Just People been tested?
While piloting the course over the last two years, about 300 people have completed the course. We then reviewed and reworked the material with the help of feedback. The overall feedback has been extremely encouraging and has highlighted a need for the course.
Is the Just People course included in the £20 delegate fee?
We wish that we could include it! Due to production costs of the course we are not able to include it in the fee for this training event. The course is available for £25 from our website.
