Faith leaders ask people to vote for a 'welcoming Wales'

On the eve of the European Elections in Wales and across Britain, Welsh religious leaders were urging people to get involved in the poll and to ensure that they use their vote to help build an open and fair society.

A statement issued on 3 June 2009 by 19 Welsh religious leaders, including the heads of the Anglican and Catholic Churches, the Free Churches and other faith communities, declared that: "as an expression of personal conviction, national faith community leaders have encouraged the electorate in Wales to use their vote [today]."

It continued: "They have also reaffirmed their commitment to work for a welcoming Wales which values all its people and celebrates its diversity, rejecting all political campaigning that creates prejudice and fear."

In Welsh, the statement reads: "Ar y diwrnod cyn yr Etholiadau Ewropeaidd yng Nghymru, fel mynegiant o argyhoeddiad personol, y mae arweinyddion cymunedau ffydd cenedlaethol yn annog etholwyr Cymru i ddefnyddio eu pleidlais yfory. Y maent hefyd wedi ail-ymroi i’w hymrwymiad i weithio am Gymru groesawgar sy’n gwerthfawrogi ei holl bobl ac sy’n dathlu ei hamrywiaeth gan ymwrthod a phob math o ymgyrchu gwleidyddol sy’n creu rhagfarn ac ofn."
