Supersessionism, or replacement theology, is the view that one religion can replace another revealed earlier in time. Christianity may be seen by some as replacing Judaism through Christ ‘fulfilling’ Jewish prophesy. Islam teaches that Prophet Muhammad was the last and final prophet, delivering a revelation which completes and perfects those of earlier messengers. If we see our own faith as replacing another, what implications does this have for interfaith dialogue? If our tradition is ‘superior’ or more complete, can we still be truly open and respectful of others?
