World Vision is one of the main charities working in Albania, and if you want to give a gift that will help people in the country, you can do it through their Must Have Gifts website .
More than a quarter of the population lives below the poverty level, making Albania one of the poorest countries in Europe. World Vision began working in Albania in 1999, providing relief operations in response to the Kosovo refugee crisis. Staff delivered weekly food packs to refugee families in Tirana, Elbasan, Saranda, and Vlore. World Vision also began rehabilitating several structures, including a transit center and two depots.
World Vision continues to collaborate with communities and families to address the immediate needs of the Albanian people. Efforts seek to promote lasting change and strengthen communities, moving families toward self-reliance.
When you purchase a gift for Albania through World Vision, a card will also be sent to the person on whose behalf you are making the gift, with your special message, making it an ideal and special present for a birthday, anniversary or Christmas.
Give an HIV Awareness pack
Your gift will help groups of children take positive action and spread the word through their friends at school, via street workshops giving life-saving information about HIV and AIDS.
Over the last six years there has been a 200% rise in HIV transmission in Albania. An increasingly migratory population, lack of understanding and a sense of disbelief around HIV and AIDS has played a part in this increase. World Vision is working on a range of projects to raise awareness and help prevent the spread of the disease in Albania. They are working with health and education officials to encourage government commitment to all aspects of HIV prevention, care and support.
And at the same time they are training peer educators to teach others about the risks of HIV, and providing life skills education, which gives young people the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to protect themselves and future generations.
Give a Woman’s apprenticeship
Give a woman a head start with an apprenticeship helping unemployed women the chance to learn new skills in partnership with employers. They can get a job and earn an income, whilst the employer gains skilled competent workers.
High unemployment in Albania is hitting women particularly hard. Not only are they struggling to gain marketable skills, they are losing out on opportunities even when they have the qualifications and ability to do the job. This project aims to change this. World Vision is helping women from communities in Lezhe to gain employment by equipping them with the skills that are needed in their local economy. To encourage future success, skilled women in the community are training others in a range of vocational skills, including handicrafts and tailoring. World Vision is also working with local businesses to encourage employment of newly skilled women and providing the materials and equipment local women need to build a successful business of their own.
Sponsor a child in Albania
By becoming a child sponsor, you’ll join World Vision in providing food, clean water, education and healthcare. It costs just £18 a month to sponsor a child. That’s just 60p a day – around the price of a daily newspaper. Through child sponsorship you forge a connection with an individual child, and can see the effect your donation is having on the life of the child for yourself.
You can look forward to drawings, hand-written letters and a yearly report on the child you support. Working closely with the community, World Vision will also help the child build the skills and knowledge they need to stand on their own two feet. That means your money is a hand-up, not a hand out.
