A leading UK network of Anglicans working for the full inclusion of lesbian and gay people in the life and ministry of the church has welcomed the US Episcopal Church's affirming stance.

A strong statement from a range of evangelical organizations has called on the Church of Scotland to affirm the membership and ministry of gay people in the church on biblical and traditional grounds - in opposition to anti-gay activists.

Actor Sean Penn, who won an Oscar this week for his portrayal of assassinated gay politician Harvey Milk, told members of anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church to reach beyond hate to their better selves.

Four Evangelical groups who believe the churches need a positive change of heart and mind on homosexuality have said condemning hate groups is not enough. They want Christian acceptance of gay people.

Contrary to the popular media image, many evangelicals are not anti-gay, says a UK campaigning network which draws hundreds of evangelical Christians and their friends together. This week they are backing the launch of a church education initiative on Jesus and prejudice.
