Catholic agencies are reporting that Pope Benedict XVI will visit Britain in 2010, after months of speculation on the nature and timing of such a visit. PM Gordon Brown extended a formal invitation to the Pope during a private audience in February.

The religion and society think-tank Ekklesia says that today's installation of the new Archbishop of Westminster, Vincent Nichols, may signal an important move away from an unhelpful 'persecution complex' which has been developing in certain sections of the churches in the last few years.

In a message that may surprise his successor, the outgoing Catholic Archbishop of Westminster says in an Easter Sunday homily that Christians should commend the Gospel by example not dominance.

Archbishop Vincent Nichols, the 63-year-old Archbishop of Birmingham, has been named as the new incumbent at Westminster, the most senior Catholic in England and Wales.
