Philippine church leaders have blamed human folly and irresponsibility for the massive floods following a tropical storm which claimed more than 240 lives and adversely affected almost two million people.
Church groups have joined thousands of demonstrators in the Makati area of Manila to denounce plans by some lawmakers to amend the 1987 constitution in a way perceived as a ploy to prolong the term of the President.
Claims made by the Philippines government to a good human rights track record "are utterly false", the Rev Berlin Guerrero told the United Nations Committee against Torture this week. He said it was "remiss in its responsibility to prevent torture".
Human rights violations in the Philippines have been addressed in US Episcopal Church testimony to the House of Representatives' Committee on Appropriations and Sub-Committee on State Foreign Operations.
