Church of Scotland parishes have been asked to raise £100 each to help a charity for homeless Scots in London, following the loss of Scottish Government backing.
Yesterday (7 April 2011) Westminster City Council ignored the opposition and pressed ahead with plans for a by-law which will outlaw rough sleeping and mobile food distribution (i.e. soup runs) in a designated area around the Victoria station in London. Final decisions await a full Council meeting in May.
The Methodist Church has condemned plans by Westminster City Council to ban rough sleeping and soup runs for the homeless as "disgusting" and "absurd".
With temperatures unlikely to rise much above freezing, the plight of the country's thousands of homeless people has been highlighted by charity workers, who are urging local authorities to step up relief efforts.
Charity groups Crisis and Housing Justice say that volunteering over the Christmas season and beyond can play a vital role in alleviating the problems of the capital's homeless and addressing key housing concerns.
