The Trades Union Council Deputy General Secretary Paul Nowak has visited Beijing, joining trade union leaders from the world’s leading industrial nations to call for coordinated action to address the risks of global recession.
Many health professionals have gone on strike in Sri Lanka, though this has been suspended for a fortnight by court order. Other workers too are threatening industrial action if their pay is not raised to match the cost of living.
The UK government may believe it has triumphed by overturning even the House of Lords’ modest amendments to the Lobbying Bill. When this becomes law, it will gravely damage democracy and human rights. But defenders of freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association will not give up easily.
