Edinburgh will be awash with military symbolism and celebration today (25 June 2011), as the city hosts the national event for Armed Forces Day - which David Cameron last year said should be “an explosion of red white and blue all over the country.” That thought may cause SNP First Minister Alex Salmond at least a moment's hiccup as he stands next to the PM on the podium!
The incongruity appeared to raise little comment. At a wedding - perhaps one of the most tender of human ceremonies in its manifestation of love and hope - all the principal male figures wore the uniforms of forces whose business is armed conflict.
Defence Secretary Liam Fox is pushing through an Armed Forces Bill that will make no meaningful changes to the armed forces. Fox and his allies use gung-ho rhetoric about "supporting our boys" while neglecting the human rights of forces personnel.
