    Quite stealthily, and without an electoral mandate, since 2010 the government has proceeded to dismantle the welfare state, and privatise the NHS, the state education system, even the fire service. But for some, it has not been radical enough, or fast enough. Hence the reappearance of Liam Fox, who left the Cabinet in disgrace in 2011.

    I have witnessed some extraordinary diatribes on the uselessness of aid this week, so thank you Defence Secretary Liam Fox for being the catalyst to a show of sentiment that makes me again wonder how far we’ve moved on since the Enlightenment.

    The Tory Shadow Defence Secretary, Liam Fox, has today attacked Nick Clegg's criticism of the Trident nuclear weapons system, insisting that Trident renewal is necessary because the country faces “real threats”. He is right that Britain faces real threats – he just hasn't explained how Trident would be useful against any of them.
