George Osborne, the UK chancellor, announced that £500 million is to be spent on a nuclear submarine base in Scotland, securing or creating over 6,700 jobs and protecting the country.
CND has criticised increased government expendidture on nuclear weapons and called for submarines to be recalled from service in the light of new safety issues.
Campaigners are expected to rally in Plymouth today to demonstrate against plans for a nuclear waste plant in the city centre. The plant would store dismantled reactor components from the UK's nuclear submarines.
