Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu is being heavily criticised for opposing government plans to legalise same-sex civil marriage.
The joint legal action of gay and heterosexual couples refused civil partnerships under UK law is scheduled to be launched in London on 21 December.
Eight couples are planning to launch a court case against the ban on same-sex marriage. They also want mixed-sex couples to be allowed civil partnerships.
