On Monday 18 November 2013 the two Edinburgh branches of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) will be meeting together to look at representations of Islam in the media.
The speakers will be Professor Hugh Goddard, a commentator on issues to do with Islam (in both Muslim-majority and Muslim-minority contexts) and Michael Munnik, a trained journalist who is currently researching perceptions of Islam in the Glasgow media, with particular reference to the Muslim sources used by journalists. The chair will be Simon Barrow, co-director of the religion and society think tank Ekklesia.
Professor Goddard is a member of the Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies department at the University of Edinburgh, and Director of the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Centre for the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World (http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/literatures-languages-cultures/alwaleed). He is the author of Christians and Muslims: From Double Standards to Mutual Understanding (London: Curzon, 1995), Muslim Perceptions of Christianity (London: Grey Seal, 1996), and A History of Christian-Muslim Relations (Edinburgh University Press and Chicago: New Amsterdam, 2000), as well as many articles on different aspects of Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations.
Michael Munnik also spoke with Professor Goddard in August 2013 at Just Festival in Edinburgh. He graduated from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, with a combined honours degree in journalism and English literature. He worked for several years as a journalist with CBC Radio before returning to academia in autumn 2010 to undertake an MA in Religion in Contemporary Society at King’s College, London. He is continuing with a PhD combining his interests in journalism and religion. Michael Munnik also serves as book review editor for H-SAE, the network for the Society for the Anthropology of Europe.
