National Housing Federation chief David Orr has produced the most succinct and compelling short rebuttal of the so-called ‘bed tax’ in the government’s deeply flawed Welfare Reform Bill.
He writes: Housing benefit for people in the private sector is already capped by the Local Housing Allowance. Rents in the social sector are capped as they are set by the government. Penalising people for their failure to live in smaller homes that may not exist, when their housing costs are already controlled, is irrational, economically suspect and socially divisive. This is a policy that must be rethought.
