Live Below the Line launches today, Tuesday 5 March 2013, so if you’re not content with signing a petition when it comes to global poverty – how about taking on the challenge of eating for just one pound a day for five days?
Progressio is the Catholic charity supporting Live Below the Line this year – a challenge which reflects the struggle of 1.4 billion people worldwide to feed themselves living on less than one pound a day.
But their next meal isn’t the only thing people living in extreme poverty have to source for one pound a day, as accommodation, healthcare and education also cost money in most poorer countries, making these things which we take for granted in the UK prohibitively expensive for 1.4 billion people.
So we encourage people here to consider being sponsored to take on the challenge themselves, holding ‘Come dine below the line’ dinner parties or tackling the challenge as a team at work or at school.
There are plenty of handy resources available from meal planners to recipes and shopping lists to make Live Below the Line just a little bit easier.
Around the world Progressio development workers are supporting people to grow their way out of poverty and provide nutritious food for their families. In the Domincan Republic and Haiti we are seeing real progress working with small scale farmers and training them to teach others about healthy diets and alternative farming techniques.
In Malawi we are working alongside young farmers who are learning about crop rotation and growing more sustainable food in order to fill the ‘hunger gap’ in the months where they previously had no harvest and had run out of food.
Live Below the Line is a great opportunity to get together with friends and family to show support for the people we are working with and to stand in solidarity with others living in extreme poverty.
Are you up to the challenge?
