The Archbishop of York, John Sentamu, is to conduct a series of public open air baptisms on Easter Day in York.

Twenty adults will be welcomed into the Christian faith at the open-air baptisms which will take place in a large water tank in the centre of York.

The baptisms will be at the heart of a united Christian celebration of new life in York, on the afternoon of Easter Day.

The celebration is organised by One Voice York, a network of Christian churches and leaders of different denominations working together across the city.

The York baptisms will include members of a number of local churches of different denominations.

The Archbishop of York will baptise men and women from a number of different Christian traditions including the Anglican, Elim and Free Churches.

The baptisms from the centre piece of a day long celebration of Easter in York city centre, including an Easter fun fair.

There will also be a ‘red carpet’ event in which church members will bring pieces of red carpet and invite passers-by to stand on them in ‘film star’ poses and be photographed to show the ‘celebrity status’ of every person in the eyes of God.
