The Church of Scotland is about to start partying – for a whole year.
From Sunday 21st November every member of the Church of Scotland will be invited to join in a year long celebration of ‘Church without Walls’.
The Church without Walls report, presented to the General Assembly in May 2001, encouraged the Church, at national, regional and local levels, to “dream dreams about God’s mission for the Church of Scotland.”
The report encouraged members to build a Church “based on the Gospel and Christ’s invitation to ‘follow me'”. This means, according to the report, a Church shaped by friendship, by the locality in which it finds itself and the gifts of those involved.
On Sunday 21 November local congregations will be invited to launch the year of celebrations.
It is being left up to each congregation to decide for themselves how best to celebrate. However regional teams across the country have been planning various activities to celebrate and on Saturday 28 May 2005 there will be a national day of celebration which will be held in the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, (EICC).
Every congregation is being invited to send three representatives who will then report back to their own congregation on Sunday 5 June on what will become known as ‘WOW’ (WithOut Walls) Sunday.
Works of art have been commissioned for the occasion, new dramas have been written for performance on the day, and there will also be a range of workshops on, amongst other things, music, drama, working with children, and using sacred spaces.
A church film festival is also being planned, with at least one ceilidh, and storytelling events.
