Goats for the Pope and a flock of sheep for the Archbishop

An overseas aid charity is asking church members to send their favourite Christian personality a goat or some chickens this Christmas ñ and help to change the life of someone in the developing world.
To raise awareness of the problems faced by poor families overseas, international relief and development agency World Vision is asking Christians to buy a gift from its Alternative Gift Catalogue on behalf of a favourite Christian ‘celebrity’ or leader.
World Visionís Paula Cummings says, ìThe idea of Rowan Williams being sent farm animals might sound bizarre but we can reassure the Archbishop that a herd of goats will not be delivered to his home! Instead, the animals will be bought overseas and delivered to a family in need.”
World Visionís Alternative Gift Catalogue offers a range of 54 innovative gift ideas including goats and chickens.
ìFor as little as £5, you can buy mosquito nets for a family in Sudan, sent on behalf of a favourite Christian TV presenter or for £12, a cooking set could be given to a family in India on behalf of a well-known Church leader. The person of your choice will be sent a card which lets them know you have bought a gift on their behalf.î
ìBuying a gift from the catalogue is a wonderful way to thank those Christians in the public eye for their work this year and to make them aware of the fight against povertyî
From a ox to an HIV education system, a wheelchair to a bicycle, you can do it all online too.
World Vision’s Alternative Gift selection is now four years old. The results are admirable. Over 5,000 children have been immunised against six childhood killer diseases. Over 12,000 fruit trees have been planted, growing produce both to eat and sell. Almost 3,000 children have had their sight restored through cataract operations.
