Theology students targetted for help over internet porn
-21/06/05
A campaign to help church leaders with issues around internet pornography is this week making its way to the London School of Theology.
The one-day event called ëSearching for Intimacyí is being held by social action charity CARE, and follows on from a similar conference held in Westminster Chapel in London last October.
The events were organised after research undertaken by CARE revealed that many church leaders had been consulted by men who used internet porn.
Students at the London School of Theology, based in Middlesex, will be given advice on how to tackle the problem of internet pornography in a ‘practical, compassionate and reflective way’.
They will take part in workshops and discussions, looking at themes such as ëHow can I protect myself?í, ëWhat is true intimacy?í and the effect that such addictions can have on families and partners.
Nola Leach, CAREís General Director, said: ìThe day will be about raising an awareness of the issues surrounding internet pornography for people going into the ministry and those working in other areas of Christian service.
ìIt will offer practical advice and help, and there will be a time of reflection and prayerî
Speakers include medical expert Dr Trevor Stammers, Stephen Carrick-Davies of Childnet International, addictions specialist David Partington, CAREís own General Director Nola Leach and child abuse consultant Dr Alice Swann.
Lyndon Bowring, Chairman of CARE, will be hosting the conference.
CARE has also launched a website to offer help, which includes an advice section for partners of those who use internet porn.
A further conference on the same theme will take place in Northern Ireland in Balmoral, Belfast, on Saturday 24 September, which will be aimed at church leaders.
