100 minute bible knocks purpose driven life

-27/09/05

A new, highly compressed summary of the Bible aimed at people reared on fast food, instant credit and the high-paced lifestyle is threatening to knock a best-selling Christian classic off its top spot.

The 100 Minute Bible was launched in the comparatively timeless setting of Canterbury Cathedral last week.

On Wednesday 21 September global media outlets reported on the launch of ìThe 100-Minute Bibleî which has been published by Len Budd of the 100-Minute Press.

The ìTodayî Programme on BBC Radio 4 devoted 10 minutes of airtime to the new book and within minutes of the feature thousands of people around the world were trying to buy a copy.

Many Christian Bookshops were unprepared for the success of its launch. But the Eden.co.uk Christian Bookshop was quick to react and provide a link to ìThe 100 Minute Bibleî from its website homepage within 1 hour.

Over the course of the next few days hundreds of copies were sold to customers as far away as Australia and New Zealand.

In just 3 days the initial print run of 10,000 copies had been sold and ìThe 100-Minute Bibleî has knocked a classic Christian bestseller ìThe Purpose Driven Lifeî off the top spot in the online bookshop’s Bestsellers List.

Gareth Mulholland, Managing Director of the Eden.co.uk Christian Bookshop, said ìAlthough some are critical of the 100-Minute Bible we know that some people, who wouldnít otherwise try to read the Bible, are taking their first step in a journey to faith.”

According to the publisherís website ìThe 100 Minute Bible is primarily intended for people who have an interest in Christianity but not the time (nor tenacity!) to read the whole Bible. As the title indicates most people will only take 100 minutes to read it, making it ideal for an upcoming rail or aeroplane journey.î

As its name suggests, the 100 Minute Bible reduces the 39 books of the Old Testament and the 27 books of the New Testament to a volume which a busy reader could get through in around an hour and 40 minutes.

The 100 Minute Bible was put together over several years by the Rev Michael Hinton, a retired school head teacher. He explained, ìWe have majored on Jesus because, for Christians, he is the central figure in the Bible.î

The social and religious context of the stories about Jesusí life, work, death and resurrection is provided by outlining the ups and downs of the history of his nation.

The Bible precis then proceeds to record the story of the growth of Christianity during the first century; firstly among the Jews, then amongst the other peoples living in Israel and then throughout the eastern Mediterranean through to Rome.

Jesusí famous Sermon on the Mount, as summarised in the 100 Minute Bible, is available as a sample on the publisher’s website.

As well as going to bookshops, copies of the 100 Minute Bible have been produced for distribution to churches and to schools.

The book is also being sold online.
