Celebrating his 75th birthday, Nobel laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu showed off his soccer skills when he made a guest appearance at the recent Homeless World Cup ñ bringing the crowd to its feet as he dribbled a ball across the Grand Parade field.
Afterwards, Tutu spoke to the enthusiastic spectators, declaring: ìWe have to make sure that everybody has a home. It is a right, not a privilege. We used to have a country that said people must be separate because of their skin colourÖ We have to make sure that everybody has a homeÖ we cannot allow this to be a new demarcationî
Commented the former Archbishop of Cape Town: ìI asked [the apartheid rulers]: ‘Why not rather judge people by their noses?’ All big-nosed people could only go to certain universities and if a small-nosed person wanted to go there they would have to apply to the Minister of Small Nose Affairs.î
Tutu said he was delighted by the turnout of so many international teams at the Homeless Word Cup, adding that many people were guilty of treating homeless persons as “virtually sub human”.
He unveiled several offshoot projects that came about as a result of hosting of the event in Cape Town, referring to the National Street League and a football-making project. Two pitches similar to those used during this event were also donated to South Africa.
The Archbishopís message, that of the tournament and of campaigners of different religions and none was unequivocal: ìWe have to unite to prevent discrimination against homeless people all over the world.î
