President Jacques Chirac offered yesterday to work with the Vatican to ensure the “primacy of law” in the future.
In a letter to the Pope he wrote: “I profoundly regret the launch of military operations, while hoping that they end as quickly as possible and with the least loss of human life.”
Having failed to stop the war, M Chirac still hopes to live up to the “Warrior for Peace” label given him by the French press.
The letter continues; “It is essential that the international community rediscovers its unity around the most fundamental human values, starting with respect for one another and tolerance.”
“Because they share very similar views on all these subjects, the Holy See and France must work together so that law, justice, and dialogue between peoples prevail.”
According to the latest polls 85 per cent of the French approve of M Chirac’s position on the war.
