Archbishop Desmond Tutu has received an honorary doctorate from Warsaw University in recognition for his work for peace and justice, and promotion of non-violent struggle.
Tutu, 73, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was given the doctorate for his “search for solutions to the problems of the world in the 21st century, wars, armed conflicts, different forms of national and racial discrimination, misery and hunger,” Professor Jan Milewski told the award ceremony.
Tutu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his non-violent struggle against apartheid in his native South Africa.
The Anglican prelate told the audience at Warsaw University that he accepted the doctorate on behalf of “the real heroes and heroines… the many millions in South Africa who opposed the awfulness of apartheid.”
