Tuesday, March 16, 2004, the first anniversary of peace activict Rachel Corrie’s death, has been remembered by Christian peacemakers.
An Israeli military bulldozer crushed Corrie as she was attempting to prevent the demolition of a home in Rafah, Gaza.
Rachel was clearly marked as an International Solidarity Movement activist in a fluorescent vest when the bulldozer ran her down.
To commemorate the day, members of the Christian Peacemaker Teams in Hebron organized a vigil in the village of Beit Ummar, north of Hebron.
The site was chosen because it is an area that has seen many home demolitions and is under threat of more.
The team joined local Palestinians at a demolished home to light candles and share some words in memory of Corrie and all
victims of the occupation.
One Member of CPT’s Hebron team joined a separate action, organized by the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), at the Erez entrance to Gaza.
ISM created this action to dramatize the difficulty of access to Gaza for International peace workers. At the checkpoint, they staged a die in. Activists wearing T-shirts that designated them as various human rights were symbolically killed by activists– labeled as the occupation, U.S., and Israel–and fell silently to the ground.
