A unique public meeting this week will bring together Refuseniks from around the world.

Refuseniks, men and women involved in the military who ìrefuse to kill their fellow human beingsî rarely hit the headlines, but say event organisers, they represent millions of people.

The event, being organised by ìPaydayî, will take place in North London on Friday.

Those attending will include an asylum seeker from Eritrea who refused compulsory military service, Tony Flint a Gulf War veteran who is campaigning for recognition of, and compensation for, Gulf War Syndrome and Yishay Mor an Israeli refusenik who will report on the five young men recently jailed for a year for refusing to serve in the Israeli Army.

Campaigners, including those from the historic peace churches, point out that the military affects everyoneís life and whilst not everybody is a soldier, in almost half the worldís countries, military service is compulsory.

They also point out that since the world is now engulfed in 38 wars government budgets, including in the UK, are drained in military expenditures.
