Carter to address Baptist World Alliance Congress

-26/01/05

Former US president Jimmy Carter has been lined up to speak at the first Baptist World Alliance Congress in the UK for 50 years.

The event, at the International Convention Centre, and the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham in July, will also be attended by Rick Warren, author of the New York Times bestseller ‘The Purpose Driven Life’ and is expected to attract up to 15,000 devotees from around the world.

Former Georgia governor Carter, 80, was noted for his devotion to the Baptist faith during his time as the 39th US president.

Since he left the White House he has worked in the fields of peace and reconciliation.

Last year Carter said Bush has gone to war in Iraq “based on lies and misrepresentations,” and that Tony Blair had followed the president’s lead against his “better judgment.”

More recently he has been with Christians working as monitors for the Palestinian elections.

A Baptist World Congress spokesman said that Carter would be leading a Bible study on the Sunday morning and giving out human rights awards on the Saturday evening of the conference.

Delegates are expected from up to 211 Baptists unions and conventions around the world, from as far afield as Angola, India and Nigeria.

David Coffey, general secretary of the Baptist Union of Great Britain and Moderator of the Free Churches, is the sole nominee to the presidency of the world alliance.

The conference, which is held every five years, will also celebrate the allianceís centenary. It was formed in London in 1905.

There are an estimated 43 million Baptist Christians in 200 countries of the world

The Congress programme begins on the evening of Wednesday 27 July 2005 and officially concludes late afternoon on Sunday 31 July 2005.
