In recent letters to the National Council of Churches in the United States and the Caribbean Conference of Churches, the World Council of Churches (WCC) General Secretary, the Rev Dr Olav Fykse Tveit invoked prayers for the people affected by Hurricane Sandy.

The devastation caused by the hurricane has claimed more than 140 lives from Haiti and Cuba to the US and Canada.

“I write to assure you of the prayers of the World Council of Churches for all those who have been affected, particularly those who have lost loved ones or who now find themselves without a home,” said Dr Tveit.

The world churches' chief went on to say that “in this time of recovery when so many local churches are working together to offer emergency relief and support, we see a poignant reminder of how important the common witness and service of the ecumenical family is.”
