Tearfund has warned that a tropical storm heading for Haiti could result in flooding or urban areas and destroy local crops and farms.

The aid agency urge people to pray for Haiti with the storm likely to hit during the course of Friday 24 August local time (late Friday / early Saturday 25 August UK time.

"At the moment it looks as though Tropical Storm Isaac won’t develop into a hurricane, so we thank God for that" said Jean Claude Cerin, Tearfund's Haiti Country Representative.

"The storm is also changing course, and we ask for continued prayer that the eye of the storm will not hit Haiti or surrounding countries.

"Please pray for everyone in Haiti as we prepare for the coming storm, especially as many are still recovering from the devastating effects of the earthquake of January 2010. We are working hard to prepare for any potential damage and would value your prayers at this time."

Through relationships with local communities, Tearfund has helped to alert people to the impending storm. Earlier this week, local warning systems encouraged people to avoid unnecessary travel, stock up on water and food and to protect important documents.

Flash flooding and landslides are possible owing to poor drainage and a lack of vegetation on hillsides. Damage to property is less likely if Isaac remains a tropical storm, but remains a concern for people living in temporary accommodation or wooden houses, which are common in rural areas.

"Once the storm has passed our team is ready to contact the villages we work with to find out how they have been affected. This will help us to prioritise the next steps," said Jean Claude.

Unlike the earthquake of 2010, weather alerts mean that people can at least prepare for Tropical Storm Isaac. However, widespread damage is possible and Tearfund is working with local government and other NGOs to help local communities prepare for, and recover from, this latest storm.
