Mary is simultaneously an ordinary young woman, and also the one who gives birth to a new life for the whole world – thus the colourful, visionary language of the later New Testament. It is through ordinariness that the extraordinary love of God breaks through to us. Mary is also a symbol of liberation, and a reminder to us today that gender justice (or the lack of it) is a major concern throughout the world.
