Two prominent US disarmament campaigners will give a talk in Edinburgh on Monday 5 January 2015 on the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons.
The Vienna Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons was a milestone in the campaign for the abolition of nuclear weapons. US activists Trish and Greg Mello, from the Los Alamos Study Group, took part. They will speak about the exciting developments at Vienna and their ongoing work campaigning against nuclear weapons in the US.
Since 1989, the Los Alamos Study Group community has consistently provided leadership on nuclear disarmament and related issues in New Mexico and nationally in the US. Their work includes policy research, environmental analysis, congressional education and lobbying, community organising, and litigation.
Greg Mello, Executive Director, is a co-founder of the Study Group and has led its varied activities since 1989. Greg has served as a consulting analyst and writer for other nuclear policy organisations. He was educated as an engineer and regional planner (Harvard, 1975). Greg led the first environmental enforcement at Los Alamos National Laboratory. In 2002, he was a Visiting Research Fellow at Princeton’s Program on Science and Global Security. His research, analysis, and opinions have been published in the New York Times, Washington Post, The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Issues in Science and Technology, in the New Mexico press, and elsewhere.
Trish Williams-Mello is Operations Director of the Los Alamos Study Group. Trish was the Operations and Development Director for Serious Texans Against Nuclear Dumping (STAND) of Amarillo, TX for 10 years. Trish co-founded the Panhandle Area Neighbors And Landowners (PANAL), as well as the Pantex Plant Citizens Advisory Board, serving on those boards while raising her four children on their family farm across the road from the Pantex Nuclear Weapons Facility. She has been the Study Group’s Operations Director since 2003.
Hosted by Edinburgh Peace and Justice Centre in association with CND in Scotland’s capital city, the event is public and free of charge. It takes place from 7-9pm on Monday 5 January at the Augustine United Church, 41-43 George IV Bridge, EH1 1EL.
