Housing Justice is the national voice for Christian action on housing and homelessness. On Thursday evening (24 July 2014) they are holding a guided walk and social event in Bermondsey, to which all are invited.
The walk will explore the history of social and public housing in the area, and will be led by housing historian and Housing Justice Board member Jenny Rossiter, who says: “This is a walk around the back streets and highways of Bermondsey. Although now a trendy and up and coming area, especially the High street, Bermondsey has a history stretching back to medieval times. In the 19th and early 20th century it was an area that manufactured biscuits and leather goods and the workforce lived in nearby densely constructed terraced housing.
“In response to deteriorating housing conditions, from the 1900’s onwards philanthropic organisations, local politicians and municipal authorities campaigned and delivered housing for local working people. Much of this housing we will see on this walk and hear about the people that made it a reality.”
The walk is from 6.00pm to 7.30pm, and will be followed by drinks and/or food. A donation of £10 is suggested.
