Commenting on the first same-sex wedding ceremonies in Scotland (31 December 2014), Simon Barrow, co-director of the religion and society think tank Ekklesia, which has put forward the Christian case for marriage equality in recent years, said:

“This is a landmark moment in Scotland and for the world. Though institutional religion is still dragging its feet on equality, many thousands of people of faith will be rejoicing tonight.

Love, faithfulness, commitment, creativity and justice are what these ceremonies embody, and those practical values are at the heart of the Christian message.

“But sometimes it takes a jolt for those who are supposed to be guardians of that message to wake up to its huge implications. That is what is happening right now.”
