The ‘War on Welfare’ e-government petition, which has amassed over 40,000 signatories, but needs 100,000 to be able to seek a parliamentary debate, is organising a ‘tweetathon’ on Thursday 6th June to add to the momentum of the campaign.

The petition, launched by disabled activists and researchers, is viewable and signable at http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/43154
Its core demand is for an independent, cumulative impact assessment of existing and upcoming welfare changes in relation to the needs and lived experience of sick and disabled people.
The organisers are asking people to promote the petition via social media at 10am, 1pm and 9pm on 6 June.
Linking the request to a personal story or appeal will help – as will contacting people or organisations who have not been previously involved and have a good followership.
On the other hand, to state the obvious, ‘spamming’, or constantly badgering celebrities and public figures is not a good idea.
The overall aim is to use petitioning in pursuit of parliamentary attention alongside lobbying of politicians on policy issues and the pursuit of legal action to advocate, defend and secure the rights of disabled people in the face of huge cutbacks being imposed by the UK government.
