The international community is being deceived by the Government of Sudan over ethnic killings and rape in Darfur, claims Christian politician and campaigner Lord David Alton today.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4 this morning, Lord Alton said that while the Sudanese authorities continued to give assurances that they were tackling the Janjaweed militia the slaughter went on.
He cited a recent international meeting where a Sudanese government representative had claimed that the situation was under control, only to be contradicted in detail by an aid agency with immediate contacts on the ground.
It is reckoned that millions people have been killed in Africaís longest civil war, perhaps 100,000 in recent fighting around Darfur alone.
The Sudanese government said this week that they would end the conflict by 31 December.
But British politicians say that the Sudanese rulers are ëlargely to blameí for what is going on, and have called for targeted sanctions, a no-fly zone over Darfur, an arms embargo and an asset freeze.
The action call on PM Tony Blair from senior Labour, Liberal Democrat and Conservative figures was backed by Lord Alton this morning, and renewed in a letter to the Independent newspaper.
