Archbishop calls for overhaul of parish system

The Archbishop of Canterbury, has called for an overhaul of the traditional parish system of the Church of England to meet the needs of modern society.
He suggested that the church could not claim to be “the body of Christ” unless it monitored and reviewed what it had so that others who were less visibly resourced had access to its money, personnel and skill.
The call came during the archbishop’s address at a service in Westminster Abbey to mark the 300th anniversary of the original national model for funding parishes – known as Queen Anne’s Bounty.
Dr Rowan Williams was “unusually blunt” on such a ceremonial occasion, reports the Guardian. He said he believed the church needed to redirect its money towards its mission in the community.
Earlier this year the Primate called for the church to look afresh at the “remarkable transforming nature of the first century church” and allow structures to be “more permissive than prescriptive” in order to inform the delivery of fresh expressions of church.
