A drive appears to be on to preserve Britain’s ageing religious heritage with the news that cathedrals don’t just minister to Britain’s spiritual needs – they help bring the money in as well.

According to a new reportlast year all England’s Anglican cathedrals received 8.8 million visitors – more than Blackpool Pleasure Beach – and may have raised ¬£150m for their cities.

The data comes from a new report; ‘Heritage Counts 2004’.

Research based on a questionnaire sent to all 42 English Anglican cathedrals showed that they are directly responsible for generating local spending of 91 million pounds a year.

Commissioned jointly by English Heritage and the Association of English Cathedrals it appears to be the first attempt to calculate the economic worth of England’s cathedrals.
