Methodist position on religious hatred branded ‘naive’

A senior Evangelical has said that the position taken by the Methodist Church over the Government’s proposed legislation on religious hatred is “naive”.
The head of public policy at the Evangelical Alliance, Don Horrocks, told the Ekklesia news service that the new legislation could lead to a “lawyers paradise”.
His comments follow an announcement by the Methodist church that it was backing Government proposals to outlaw actions which incite religious hatred.
The measures, contained in the Serious Organised Crime and Police Bill currently before Parliament, would make it a criminal offence to incite hatred against any individual or group because of their religious beliefs.
Methodist Parliamentary and Political Secretary Rachel Lampard says that the views held by some Evangelicals and others opposed to the proposed measures were based on a misconception of the Bill.
