Pope’s warning about myth of redemptive violence

Pope John Paul II has condemned people’s readiness to use violence to impose peace, and denounced what he called the unfolding drama in Iraq which had led to “uncertainty and insecurity” for the whole world.
In a message that also focused on the continent of Africa, debt cancellation and the responsibility of rich nations, he suggested that “To attain the good of peace there must be a clear and conscious acknowledgement that violence is an unacceptable evil and that it never solves problems.”
The comments came in the pope’s annual World Peace Day message for January 1 released by the Vatican.
The pope also deplored the “troubling phenomenon of terrorist violence, which appears to be driving the whole world towards of future of fear and anguish”.
“How can we not think with profound regret of the drama unfolding in Iraq, which has given rise to tragic situations of uncertainty and insecurity for all?”
The pope has previously suggested that new generations must learn ìlifestyles of peaceî, based on ìfour pillarsî of truth, justice, love and freedom.
