Whilst George Bush was invoking God’s blessing in his inauguration speech, a radical new book that suggests Christianity has been hijacked by Republicanism and challenges the ‘moral agenda’ of the US President hit the New York Times bestseller list. The Ekklesia news agency has been told that “God’s Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn’t Get It” by Jim Wallis from the Sojourners community in Washington DC is to go straight in at No. 11 on The New York Times best-seller list which will be printed on Sunday, January 30.

The Book, which challenges many of the assumptions of the debate surrounding ‘values voters’ in the recent US Presidential elections, hit No. 2 on the Amazon.com bestsellers list last week, before its launch. “I poured my heart and soul into this book, and it already appears that it just might be the right book at the right time.” said Jim Wallis, the books author. “The emergence of the ‘moral values’ discussion since the election has given us enormous new opportunities, and the media attention the book is receiving makes us very hopeful.” The Book, which carries on Amazon.com a review by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, suggests that the Right in America has hijacked the language of faith to prop up its political agenda. The Left, Wallis suggests, hasn’t done much better, largely ignoring faith and continually separating moral discourse and personal ethics from public policy. While the Right argues that God’s way is their way, the Left pursues an unrealistic separation of religious values from morally grounded political leadership. The consequence is a false choice between ideological religion and soulless politics. The effect of this dilemma was made clear in the 2004 presidential election suggests Wallis. The Democrats’ miscalculations have left them despairing and searching for a way forward. It has become clear that someone must challenge the Republicans’ claim that they speak for God, or that they hold a monopoly on moral values in the nation’s public life. Wallis argues that America’s separation of church and state does not require banishing moral and religious values from the public square. In fact, the very survival of America’s social fabric depends on such values and vision to shape America’s politics – a dependence the nation’s founders recognized says the author. “We’re impacting the national dialogue at a critical time. As the Bush inauguration comes and goes, we are encouraged by the strong response to this message of progressive faith, and the potential of a movement that will address all our moral values” a statement from Sojourners said.
