George W Bush bigger than Jesus shock!
-30/01/05
John Lennonís rash claim that the Beatles were ëbigger than Jesusí caused fury across the world in March 1966. Now a similar thing might be said of George W. Bush, though no-one is accusing the devout US president of pushing the claim himself.
However research by Christian think-tank and news service Ekklesia indicates that the American supremo records significantly more results on the worldís most popular internet search engine than the Saviour of the world.
According to stats on Googlefight.com (which is at pains to stress that is not affiliated with or sponsored by its corporate namesake), the keyword ìGeorge W Bushî produces 14,100,000 results, but ìJesusî gets a mere 12,400,000.
Neither US presidential spokespersons nor prominent theologians were immediately available to offer Ekklesia an interpretation of the shock result, but one political commentator said that it might have something to do ìwith the religious right in the USA thinking they know better than God.î
Another commentator immediately denounced this accusation as ìunsubtle, unreasonable, but not absolutely unfair.î
Lennon was less circumspect in an interview with a London newspaper that reverberated around the globe in March 1966.
“Christianity will go – it will vanish and shrink,” he remarked. “I needn’t argue with that; I’m right and I will be proved right. We are more popular than Jesus now; I don’t know which will go first – rock ‘n’ roll or Christianity. Jesus was all right but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It’s them twisting it that ruins it for me.”
The legendary Beatleís latter comment has allegedly been taken by Bush adversary Michael Moore as a veiled prophecy about GW, but many (though not all) church leaders regard this as far-fetched.
Other ëhall of fameí Googlefights include a stunning 63 million + victory for ìmyselfî over ìmeî, which is taken as an indicator of the relentless narcissism of the age. ìBetaî also scores paradoxically higher than ìalphaî
Ekklesia, which lost to the BBC by an embarrassing margin (but rather impressively tied with the Roman Curia), can also exclusively reveal that the chicken did indeed come before the egg, on Googlefight at least ñ by a stunning 26.8 million to 17.3 million.
