Concert to raise funds for tsunami survivors -04/01/05
The director of the theological think tank Ekklesia is to get behind a drum kit to raise funds for the survivors of the Asian tsunami. Jonathan Bartley is amongst musicians set to rock and roll at a charity concert later this month, set to raise thousands of pounds. The Asian Quake Appeal gig has been pulled together over the last few days by music promoter Iain Martin. Amongst the acts invited to play are the high octane rhythm and blues bandThe Mustangs, in which Ekklesia’s director is the drummer. The Mustangs have recently taken the blues world by storm, dominating the CD Wow top ten for 18 months. They have just released their fourth album “Rocking Horse” on Raging Horse Records. Iain Martin decided on the charity concert after a number of the musicians he works with said they wanted to help the millions affected by the quake disaster. ìThey said it was the biggest disaster ever and that there must be something we could do,î Iain said. ìThe idea came together over the next 24 hours. Itís amazing how many people have said they would help. This disaster seems to have touched everybody in some way.î Iain pledged that every penny raised by the gig would be handed over to the Disasters Emergency Committee which is coordinating fund raising in the UK. ìEveryone is giving their time and effort for free so there will be no administration or other costs.î The venue with its staff have been given for free. Seven other acts will join The Mustangs at the Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth on Wednesday, January 19. Musicians already pledged to play include singer-songwriter Andy Comley and Obviously Five Believers. Corporate support is also being recruited for the event. Fundraiser Karen Betancourt-Jess said: ìCompanies will be able to buy Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze bonds of support depending on the amount they are willing to donate.î Tickets for the Asian Quake Appeal concert are £10. They can be obtained from Stiff Promotions Ticket Hotline 07931 370110 or from the Wedgwood Rooms on 02392 863911. The concert is at the Wedgewood Rooms, Portsmouth on Wednesday 19th January. Doors open at 7.00pm
