Christian unity prayers focus on tsunami

The presidents of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland (CTBI) have commended a special focus for prayers during the coming Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (18 to 25 January) for the Churches of the Indian Ocean region devastated by the earthquake and tsunami.
“Christian Unity is about the Churches of the world being in solidarity with one another recognizing each other as fellow members of the body of Christ,” said Dr David Goodbourn, general secretary of CTBI.
“So we are praying for Churches around the Indian Ocean as they suffer with their people, struggle to care for all who have been affected and seek to express God’s love.”
CTBI has produced a web page containing suggested prayers and updates from the region.
“The prayers CTBI is offering for people to use reflect concerns and messages brought to us from the region itself,” David Goodbourn added.
One email from the Christian Conference of Asia prayed for ‘God’s blessings, guidance and protection on all those who have become a victim to this fury of nature.’
The presidents of CTBI are: The Most Revd Mario Conti (Roman Catholic Archbishop of Glasgow), The Most Revd and Rt Hon David Hope (Anglican Archbishop of York), Revd David Kerr (Methodist Superintendent of the Belfast Central Mission), Revd Nezlin Sterling (New Testament Assembly), and Sister Eluned Williams (former President of Methodism in Wales).
Churches Together in Britain and Ireland is the umbrella body for all the major Christian Churches in Britain and Ireland. It liases with ecumenical bodies in Britain and Ireland as well as ecumenical organizations at European and world levels. Its work includes Church Life, Church and Society, Mission, Inter Faith Relations, International Affairs and Racial Justice. It provides a forum for joint decision-making and enables the Churches to take action together.
