Churches focus on violence and forgiveness

-12/09/05

Churches Together in Britain and Ireland – the umbrella body for all the major Christian Churches in Britain and Ireland – is to launch a study course on violence and forgiveness.

Its publication will come on the day designated by the United Nations for the entire world to observe a day of peace and non-violence.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) has also urged congregations worldwide to use this day – 21st September – to pray for peace.

The ecumenical study course for Lent 2006, is called ëEaster People in a Good Friday World: Witnessing Christ in the conflict of life.í

In it, authors Myra Blyth and Wendy Robins use contemporary stories to explore the different kinds of violence seen daily in the media, along with aspects of forgiveness and reconciliation.

The five- part course is commended by the Presidents of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland. In it, they write; “As Christians, we dare not turn away from the agonies of the world, because it was by violence that Christ was put to death.

“Easter People in a Good Friday World, the CTBI Lent Course for 2006, engages with anger, violence and patterns of Christian response as we seek to live as ‘Easter People’, a phrase of the late Pope John Paul 11. We hope that as the fruit of your shared reflection, you will feel encouraged and better equipped to be peacemakers and reconcilers.”

Copies, price £3.99 ISBN 085 169327, can be ordered from CTBI Publications, phone 01733 325 002 or via www.ctbi.org.uk
